Are you feeling depressed for no reason? Bad feelings, mood swings and other symptoms of depression can sometimes seem to land upon you from nowhere. It's important to understand that if you're feeling depressed, you might not be able to see an obvious cause or  reason.

In this article, you’ll find useful information to help you understand better why you might be feeling low without any obvious reason.

Everybody who lives a full and healthy life will experience emotional ups and downs. We all experience different emotional states in response to learning, growing and experiencing how to interact with the world.

It's natural to feel low, sad or unhappy after going through a difficult or an unfortunate event in life, such as losing a loved one, losing a job, or being under a constant 'stress overload'. Often, feeling down or having a low mood is just temporary, and often just goes away naturally after a while. However, feeling low is different from being depressed. When your unexplained low mood persists for more than two weeks, this might be a sign of clinical depression.

Why do I feel so depressed for no reason? This is a common question you might ask yourself, especially if you have good quality of life.  If you have a roof over your head, food and fresh water you might think it's unreasonable to be feeling how you are. However, if you're suffering with depression you'll look around and see many good things and people around you, but you're no longer able to enjoy them.

When you're feeling depressed for no reason, it can sometimes be overwhelming to struggle with feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness and guilt. It can even be more frustrating to experience a lack of energy to perform your daily activities and have no real interest in life, even in things that previously brought you pleasure. However, it's important to understand that anyone, regardless of age, gender, or status can feel depressed for no apparent reason at all. If you are feeling this way it's important to take notice and do something about it.

There may be reasons you don't yet recognize

The causes of depression are rarely obvious. This is the reason why you need to become your own detective, and do all the things you can to lift your mood.

There are some contributing factors that are known to increase a person's risk of suffering from depression or can trigger an onset of a depressive episode. These include genetic factors, hormonal changes, brain chemistry, grief, trauma, debt or other financial-related issues, alcohol or substance abuse, smoking, change of season, lack of exposure to sunlight, side effects of medication, poor sleep habits, nutrient or vitamin deficiency, lack of physical activity, relationship problems and other chronic illnesses like thyroid problems, diabetes or a heart disease.

Feeling depressed for no reason is sometimes the first warning sign of a more serious underlying illness. That's why it's important for you to see a doctor to rule out this possibility
